Nicholas Quirke was on his own on 13 May 2021 when he made his way to the hospital for his second dose of the Sino Covid vaccine. This meant he would have to negotiate conversations with the community officers and medical staff himself. This was not an impossible task but having a translator in tow made everything quicker and smoother. As it was, he really didn’t need to even consider communication problems as once he had liaised with the community officer and he followed the nurses Chinese instructions to the 3rd floor the territory’s was familiar and he followed the exact path of admin he had done before. Once he had received the jab in his other arm his minder left and he waited for 30 minutes to make sure there was no immediate reaction to the introduction of the virus into his blood system. The day was grey but the temperature was warm and the lightweight sweater he had worn began to make him feel hot. There was a notable Beijing park he had actually not been in the vicinity of the hospital and now he was on his own he could take advantage of its proximity and discover a new aspect of the City. Rendinghu Park was constructed in 1958 and features a picturesque western style landscape with classical arcades and statues, trees, lawns, fountains, pools; a fantasy Garden of Eden, the gardens of ancient Rome, Egypt, Babylon, Islam, and the Versailles palace garden, Italian terrace garden and a tranquil lake. In fact the architecture of the park was a fascinating combination of 1950’s modern and classical art and populated with a number of locals pursuing their favourite pastimes, from choral singing, dancing, drumming to drawing characters in water on the paving stones with giant brushes. It took very little imagination to go back 60 years to the parks inauguration and imagine the landscape filled with the proletariat. He was once again a subject of curiosity and his scrutiny of the people involved in their past times was equalled when he was asked to pose for photographs too. The walk along the river was equally pleasing despite the grey skies. His appointment had been early and the process so smooth that he still had time to return home for lunch before going to his class in Chaoyangmen with Harry and Willis. At home, ‘The Queens Gambit’ and ‘Mare of Eastfield’ awaited. As previously experienced when he had his inoculation he felt fatigued and was relieved when he could drag his weary bones too sleep.
